Paper Heritage - Newfoundland Printings

Most of the railway-related stamps of Newfoundland were re-issued with modified designs by new printers. Sorry about the long download times of the images, but it was necessary to produce high-quality scans in order to show the detail differences of the various printings.

1. Steam Train at Grand Falls Paper Mills, 1910/11:

There is a small steam locomotive exiting the mill on a track which extends down to the letter 'I' in 'MILLS')

The Perkins Bacon printing also exists Imperf (SG180a) and Line Perf. 14-13 (SG 180b)

Additional issue in this design: The 1928 and 1929 printings are without watermark. A further Perkins Bacon printing was made in 1931 with watermark (coat-of-arms) SG 199 Mi.162 Domfil 931.11

Designs of the two printings: There are numerous differences:
De la Rue Printing: The inverted commas before the 'C' of 'CARIBOU' do not touch the frame line above, the flag at the bow of the ship is triangular, there is an extra rope to the top of the rear mast.
Perkins Bacon Ptgs: The inverted commas before the 'C' of 'CARIBOU' touch the frame line above, the flag at the bow is almost square, there is no extra rope to the rear mast.

Designs of the two printings: There are several differences:
De la Rue Printing: The side window of the locomotive cab is lightly shaded; the fence wires next to the front of the loco are weakly drawn, the first of the connecting rods points slightly downwards, the lower part of the scroll to the right of the figure 5 at top left has a blunt end.
Perkins Bacon Printings: The side window of the locomotive cab appears blacked out; the fence wires are strongly engraved,the first of the connecting rods is horizontal, the lower part of the scroll to the right of the figure 5 at top left has a thin curly tail.
