(Beyer-)Garratt Locomotives on Stamps (issues to 2010)
This article is devoted to stamps portraying Garratt locomotives of the world, including those on local stamps, where known to us. Beyer-Peacock, the company which acquired the Garratt patent, built around 1000 Beyer-Garratts, but a number of Garratts were also constructed by other companies under licence in various countries, including the UK, Belgium, France and Germany. We do not usually produce thematic articles of this nature, since the time required, for example to identify classes of locomotive, far exceeds that required simply to list the stamps. Producing this article has revealed a disturbingly large number of casually, frequently wrongly, described stamps, most noticeably when the stamps are the work of an authorised agent, rather than a postal administration which might, one hopes, have a greater desire to avoid some of the embarrassing inaccuracies we have encountered.
It seems highly likely that there will be some omissions in such a work and we would appreciate hearing about them, bearing in mind please that this article only covers stamps up to, and including, 2010. The most difficult part of this article, by far, has been trying to assign the Class to many of the locomotives shown here. We imagine there will be several mistakes in this aspect of the article, which can be made even more difficult by the fact that locomotives, when sold to another country, are usually assigned a new Class. We would like to correct any errors, so please do send us an email to help improve the article for everyone.
So-called 'Abusive', perhaps better described as 'Undesirable', stamp issues :
Many national post offices, and postal agencies working on their behalf, have been responsible for producing stamps which are open to criticism both for the nature of their issuing policies and for their excessive output. The 1976 FIP Congress held in Philadelphia fashioned an appeal to postal administrations urging restraint and they put forward criteria for what, in their opinion, could be described as 'undesirable' issues. Whilst we applaud the philosophy and good intent behind the initiative, it remains the case that stamps which fall into the 'undesirable' categories are nevertheless valid for postage and we note that some catalogues seem more inclined to place stamps in the 'undesirable' category when they emanate from Third World countries. We include all postally valid issues in this article, even those where, due to distribution policies, the opportunity for the public to employ them on mail in their country of issue is rather more notional than real.

Illegal Stamps :
In recent decades, there have been a number of issues produced privately and fraudulently, intentionally seeking through their appearance and inscriptions to resemble the issues of a sovereign country, including the presence of a face value. These stamps breach international law and are designed principally to defraud stamp collectors. However, by their presence on the market, they also damage the reputation of the stamps of the country from which they purport to have been come.
We would have preferred not to illustrate illegal stamps in this article at all, but ignoring something does not make it go away. Not to list them would simply leave a collector wondering whether we had not listed them due to omission or due to their fraudulent nature. We know that some collectors choose to have them in their collection despite their status, but we do not in any way commend them to you. End of passage on Illegal Stamps.

Summary with regard to a stamp's status.
It is often by no means easy to establish a stamp's authenticity without considerable time and effort, this becoming increasingly difficult the more recent the issue. Some catalogues are very slow to list the genuine stamps of certain countries, perhaps out of concern that they may inadvertently list illegal issues, illustrating how difficult it can be, even for those whose lives are centred around philately, to establish the authenticity of issues in some cases.
Another unhelpful feature of some catalogues is that they sometimes list 'undesirable' issues in a minimalist manner, perhaps just a simple text listing, often making it impossible to identify whether a stamp is included somewhere in that listing. This unfortunately makes it even harder when trying to distinguish the 'undesirable but authentic' from the highly damaging 'illegal'. As mentioned above, our listing does not seek to distinguish the so-called 'undesirable' issues from the 'untainted', but it does identify and, by colour coding, seek to provide protection against inadvertently purchasing illegal stamp issues.

Some classes of Garratt require notes about their Class designation. Rather than a constant repetition of a footnote for those that turn up quite frequently, we are prefacing the listing with the following observations on selected groups:
Algerian Garratts: Unfortunately, we have had to remove a link here to an excellent article on Algerian Garratts after discovering that the website had been taken over by yet another online gambling house. As some compensation, we show a superb postcard view of Algerian Garratt 231-132 B 10:
Kenya-Uganda Railway (KUR) Class EC3 : These 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratts were later re-classified as East African Railways (EAR) Class 57 (if coal-fired) or Class 58 (if oil-fired). The twelve members of the class were built by Beyer, Peacock & Co. in Manchester, England, and were numbered 77-88 in KUR stock, but re-numbered 5701-5712 when absorbed into EAR stock. For the history of the strategically important (and costly) Kenya-Uganda Railway and the creation of the East African Railways in 1948 as a result of its amalgamation with the railways of what was then the Tanganyika Territory (now Tanzania), there is Wikipedia as well as several other interesting online sources.
South Africa Classes GMA & GMAM. All locomotives of South Africa which we describe as GMA/M could be, and were, altered frequently between Classes GMA and GMAM by the simple expedient of placing baffles in the tenders and bunkers to decrease the overall weight of the locomotive for branch-line working (GMA), or removing the baffles to adapt the locomotives to mainline working (Class GMAM in that configuration).
Note: SAR can be the abbreviation on stamps both for South African Railways and South Australian Railways. We have always used 'South Australian Railways' in full in this article, with any SAR abbreviation reserved for South African Railways.
Other notes of interest have been added just the once in the text, despite usually being applicable to all the listings of that Class of locomotive.
Listings of Imperforate Stamps and Epreuves de Luxe:
Most modern issues are found imperforate, probably including many of those that we may not have expressly listed below. Many former French Colonies tend to issue épreuves de luxe, the ones with a white border surround, with most of their issues. We have shown and listed some but others will be found. This listing is primarily for the locomotives themselves, with imperfs, proofs and similar material mentioned where we have seen them, but we have not researched all the different ancilliary productions for each design.

The Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino (in English, the Southern Fuegian Railway) is a 500 mm-gauge line, also known as the 'Train of the End of the World', reflecting Tierra del Fuego's extreme southern latitude on the South American continent. We are not aware whether the locomotives on this railway have been assigned Classes.

This is a strangely-inscribed sheetlet. In the top margin is the inscription 'Locomotive Garrat (swatziland)' containing three errors, Garrat for Garratt, small 's' for Swaziland and a letter 't' added into Swaziland. Furthermore, there are no Garratts among the locomotives in this section of the border.
At the foot, the sheet is inscribed 'Locomotive Garrat SAR' (for South African Railways) but the Garratt shown carries the initials of the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR).

The Class GO is very similar to, and based on, the Class GMA/M. Class GO was designed for use on light branch lines, on which even the GMA/M when configured for branch-line work was unsuitable. We have relied on the stamp inscriptions for identifying Class GO from the usual GMA/M.

This set/26 is comprised of 8 single values from normal sheets (each at 750Fr) and three sheetlets/6 (6x200Fr, 6x300Fr & 6x750Fr). One of the single 750Fr stamps, two of the 300Fr stamps and two of the 750Fr sheetlet stamps show Garratts.

The stamp is not well drawn and the locomotive is hard to identify, even down to its wheel arrangement. Our best guess at this is a Rhodesia Railways Class 15/15A , which has a 4-6-4 + 4-6-4 wheel arrangement, sharply in contrast to the stamp's description, which appears to be incorrect in every respect: Class, wheels, country and date.

Iran 1949 : April 28th : Iran's Participation in World War II.
In, 1936 Beyer Peacock supplied Iran with four Garratt 2-8-4 + 4-8-2 (BP works numbers 6787–6890). In 1938 these were designated as Class 86.01. The images show the original photograph that was the source material for the stamps and both that and the stamp have sufficient detail to suggest very strongly that one of these Garratts is depicted on the stamp, making it the earliest example of a Garratt on a stamp.

One of two 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 Class 'B' Garratts built in Belgium by St. Leonard in 1926, with Works Numbers 2031/32, for the Chemins de Fer de Madagascar. We have been advised that a photo of this locomotive is shown on page 87 of the book 'Steam in Africa' by Durrant, Lewis and Jorgensen, published by Struik.

This issue is comprised of 8 sheetlets/4, all showing different locomotives on the stamps AND in the sheet margins. Six of the eight sheetlets have Garratt interest. The stamps have dual currency; we describe them by their stated Malagasy Franc (FMG) value.

Although visually rather different at first sight, we think this is another image of a Class B Garratt as described below the 1974 Madagascar listing above. We have seen a report that the two locomotives of this were numbered 101 and 102 after being delivered to Madagascar, but confirmation of this is needed. We have found few images or records of earlier engines such as these but a number of Garratts including several 2-6-0+0-6-2 engines may be found here (opens in a new tab)

At least two classes of Garratt were owned by the CFM, one being Class 951, all, we think, built by Haine St Pierre and different in several details to the locomotive shown on the stamp.
Although we have found a few images online of a Henschel-built Garratt like the one shown on the stamp, one stated to be 'Africa Railways - Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique "Beyer Garratt" type 4-8-0+0-8-4 steam locomotive Nr. 973 (Henschel Locomotive Works, Kassel 28644 / 1956)', which you can see here (opens in a new tab), we have not been able to find reference to its Class.

These are very well-searched and produced stamps, albeit rather too numerous, but for Garratts only, the numbers are small. So far as we know, ALL these stamps can be found as follows:

Based on wheel arrangement and the stamp's date of issue, we are reasonably confident that this stamp is intended to depict a 15th Class (or Class 15A) Garratt.

Tanzania 1985 : Oct. 7th : Locomotives.
The 1985 Locomotive set, including the 20/- Garratt #6004, is found Perf, Imperf and in Perf & Imperf miniature sheets. It also exists overprinted for the Caribbean Royal Visit, an issue which Michel lists, and for Ameripex '86, an issue which Michel recognizes with a footnote. It is not clear that the Ameripex overprint was issued inside Tanzania and it may only have been released by the postal authority's authorised agents abroad. As they are clearly not illegal stamps, we provide a full listing but include imperforate versions of the stamps only where we have seen them ourselves; however, other imperforate issues probably exist.
Shades: There are some quite significant shades of the 20/- (and other values) but we have not attempted to list these.

The stamp is inscribed 'Uganda' but this is an East African Railways, not a Uganda Railways, locomotive.

This set/24 was issued as 8 stamps from normal sheets and two sheetlets of 8 stamps each. Five of the eight stamps from normal sheets show Garratts and each of the two sheetlets/8 also contain two Garratts. Three miniature sheets were also issued but none of these show Garratts.

Roger Farnworth has published online an interesting article mentioning KUR Beyer-Garratts in Indo-China which may be found here (opens in a new tab).
Additionally, Wikipedia lists two KUR Garratts of the EC1 Class as having been sent to Indo-China and the wheel arrangement and several general features of the stamp suggest that this image is a primitive representation of an EC1 (or perhaps other KUR Garratt). Shown below in alphabetical order are scans of any post-2010 issues that we happen to have noticed. No attempt has been made to list all post-2010 issues nor have we provided any philatelic or technical information on these stamps.
Angola : 2019
South African Class GMA 4-8-2 + 2-8-4. The souvenir sheet has a monochrome Garratt in the sheet margin, apparently the same image as the stamp but reversed.
Set/4 in sheets/10, only one sheet with a Beyer-Garratt. The other sheets have no Garratt on the stamps and none of the four sheets have a Garratt in the sheet border.
