Section 1: Railway Telegraph Stamps 1883- . . . . . . . . . Telegrafos Particulares (Ferrocarriles Andaluces) 1883-.

We have been unable to find any studies or research published on these scarce, and in some cases, rare Railway Telegraph stamps. The issue date usually assigned to all of them is 1883, the first issue date, but this may simply be due to lack of any accurate records being kept.

There were two railway companies in Andalucia which issued their own Telegraph Stamps, the 'Ferrocariles Andaluces' and the 'Ferrocarril de Baeza a Algeciras', the stamps being listed in Edifil. In over 30 years, we have never seen any stamp being offered from the Ferrocarril de Baeza a Algeciras.

The stamps of both railways were printed in sheets of 100 by typography with the sheet position (1-100, probably arranged 10x10) forming part of the main design. These are very simple stamps with just a boxed text and the printers were not particularly careful, resulting in numerous varieties in the text, perhaps most noticeably a wrong accent on 'Num' and the omission of the stop on the bottom line after the numeral. Over the years, we have retained scans of many of these stamps which have either passed through our hands or that we have spotted online, and we have decided to display here all the positions of each stamp for which we have scans. We hope these scans will assist anyone trying to expand the study on these scarce stamps.

We have noted one or two varieties in the textx below the scans, but, due to the potential number of varieties, we have generally not attempted to list these in our catalogue-style listings (in green).

The 'Ferrocarriles Andaluces' stamps are usually listed as having 4 issues but there are two frame-line styles found in both the First and Second issues. We have not been able to establish with certainty whether these two styles come from sheets with a single mixed setting or from two different sheet settings, nor have we found any mention of these two distinct frame-line styles elsewhere. It seems highly probable to us that these two arrangements of the frame-lines are from the same sheet, but, in order to prove this, we would need to find a multiple showing both frame-line types se-tenant. Alternatively, different settings would be suggested if we were to discover two stamps from the same sheet position with different frame-lines, but this is something which, to date, we have not encountered.
.

Ferrocarriles Andaluces : FIRST Issue : Stamps IMPERFORATE

As just mentioned, there are two distinct frame-line styles on the stamps associated with the First Issue, with either vertical or horizontal frame-lines on the outside.
Note: The dotted lines were presumably provided simply to assist employees in separating stamps with scissors.

Evidence of apparent use of same plates / formes for both values of the Imperforate Stamps:
Ferrocarriles Andaluces 10c Imperf Railway telegraph 1P Imperf Espana sellos telegrafos Ferrocarriles Andaluces 10c Imperf Railway telegraph 1P Imperf

We have images of both the 10c and 1 Pta for positions 43 and 64. Whilst there are small differences in some letters which appear simply to be the result of poorly-cleaned printing plates or formes, it is noticeable that there are significant features common to each position which are not generally present in other plate positions of this issue:
Position 43: The letter 'A' of 'Andaluces' is too low and the first 'i' in 'Servicio' is damaged at the foot. We have shown detail scans of this feature alongside.
Position 64: There are few text points of interest, but the hyphen between Te and legrafos is concave in both cases. The frame lines (with vertical lines outside) appear identical.

This would certainly seem to suggest that the same plates/formes were used for the Imperforate 10c and 1 Pta, with only the words of value amended.

Ferrocarriles Andaluces : SECOND Issue : Stamps Perf 13˝. Design: THIN frame lines on all four sides.

Again, and once more not mentioned in any catalogue that we have seen, there are the two distinct frame-line styles on the stamps of the Second Issue, with either vertical or horizontal frame-lines on the outside. We have seen examples of both frame-line formats on both the 10c and 1 Pta values of this issue.

.

Ferrocarriles Andaluces 10c Imperf Ferrocarriles Andaluces 1883
Above: First and Second Issue 10c stamps, both from Position 53.

Based on the stamps we have seen, we think it unlikely that any of the Second Issue are perforated remainders of the First Issue. However, we have only one sheet position of a First Issue to compare with the same position of the Second Issue, see scans above. Comparing these, the accent on 'Num' could have been corrected, of course, but there are enough other small differences for us to adopt the view for the present time that the Second Issue is an entirely new setting. As with the First Issue, we lack the information with regard to whether the 'frames inside' and 'frames outside' styles come from a single setting or from two different settings and this can only be resolved by finding the same evidence as is needed to establish this matter with the First Issue.

Another question is whether the same plate, with value changed, was used for the 10c and the 1 Pta? We have yet to see examples of the 10c and 1 Pta of the Second Issue from the same sheet position in order to form a view on this.

These stamps are all scarce and part of a small number of jig-saw puzzles. They are very simple puzzles, only 100 pieces per puzzle, all numbered. Unfortunately, we have a lot of missing pieces!

We invite you to check any of these stamps that you possess against those that we have shown below in order to see if you can shed any light on the many questions about these stamps. If you have ANY Ferrocarriles Andaluces telegraph stamps from any issue that are different from those shown in this article, we would like to add the images to this article so that, in time, hopefully, the full story of these stamps will reveal itself and the 'ifs and maybes' can be removed from this part of the article. Please send us an email (and scans) and share your discoveries.

Ferrocarriles Andaluces : THIRD Issue : Stamps Perf 13˝. Design: Two thick frame-lines & Two thin frame-lines.

This is a very scarce issue, and the number of scans we are providing is in keeping with the scarcity. We have only seen examples of this issue from position 3 and 90. The 10c stamps of the Third Issue are distinctive also due to their being printed in Black, the only issue produced in this colour.
We have not seen any of the 1 Peseta stamps in Red of this issue but currently have no reason to think that they have any close relationship to any of the other issues.

Ferrocarriles Andaluces : FOURTH Issue : Stamps Perf 13˝. Design: Thick frame-lines all round.

There is only a 10c value for this design. The Edifil catalogue gives two colours, Dark Blue and Ultramarine. For the illustrations, we have not attempted to separate them, firstly because we do not trust the colours of all the scans to be true and, secondly, because study of the types is easier when they are taken together.

Here we have sufficient material to confirm that the varieties are constant in each position. In the two stamps showing Num 24 (one in the block of 6), we have the low 'C' in F.C. and varying degrees of loss of the tops of the letters 'And' of Andaluces. In Num 64, of which there are two shown, both exhibit an inverted 's' in 'Andaluces'.

Spain: Railway Postal History:

In the 19th Century, several railway companies marked their mail with pictorial handstamps, often incorporating an early steam locomotive. These are certainly most interesting and collectable, but outside the scope of this article, as is railway postal history in general.
FCA perfin : Over many decades the Ferrocarriles Andaluces punctured their stamps FCA to provide security from misuse or theft. They are quite commonly offered for sale. Perfins are also outside the scope of this article.

* * * Special Note on Specimen Stamps applicable to the whole of Section 2 of this article. * * *

Spanish specimen stamps of the period come in several styles, although not all the styles listed below are found on all of the issues. All are collectable and are found in the Edifil specialized catalogue but we have been selective in this article in our coverage of these specimen stamps.

The following Specimen styles are INCLUDED in our listing.

Muestra Specimen Spain 1931 Postal Union Congress Spain 1931 Waterlow Salesman's Sample Specimen Espana Spain Muestra A000,000

1. Overprinted MUESTRA
2. Perforated with the word SPECIMEN
3. Overprinted WATERLOW & SONS LTD. / SPECIMEN, usually with small punch hole (stamp in unissued colours).
4. With Control Number A000,000 on the gummed side, usually in blue, applied vertically or horizontally.

Specimen stamps identified solely by large or small punch-holes are EXCLUDED in our listing.

Above: The punch hole is known in Spanish as 'taladro'. There are two main types of punch:

5. One medium-size punch hole, usually (but not always) fairly near the centre of the stamp.
6. With one or more corners showing an arc of quite a large punch hole. The three blocks/4 shown above, all from the same set and the same corner of the sheet, illustrate how randomly these punch holes covering four stamps seem to have been applied.

This article provides catalogue-style listing for specimen stamps in categories 1-4 but does not include categories 5/6, with one exception. One of two imperforate stamps are never found without 'taladro', so, exceptionally, we do include these imperforate stamps in our listings.

Our exclusion of taladro specimens impacts most on the 1931 Postal Union set, in which there are a very large number.

Note: Not all Spanish stamps with punch holes are specimens. During the 19th century, punch holes usually indicate telegraphic usage of the stamp, usually bringing down its market value significantly, but, by the 1930s, stamps with punch holes are almost invariably SPECIMEN stamps.

1930 : XI Congreso Internacional de Ferrocarriles : 11th International Railway Congress.

This is an iconic railway thematic set, with 13 postage values, an express stamp and 6 airmail values. The set had a very low print run, with only 10,000 of the postage 10 Pesetas printed, and only around 25,000-50,000 printed for the low values of the postage set, explaining why even the low values are missing from many country collections of Spain. All catalogues seem to price the postage 1c-20c values at ridiculously low levels for their scarcity.

In Spain, the postage set is normally sold together with the express stamp but, elsewhere, these are sometimes sold separately. The airmails are most usually offered separately from the postage set. All stamps, except for the postage 1c and 2c have a control number (sheet number) in blue on the back, applied below the gum and therefore also present on used stamps. Stamps with control A000,000 on the back are Specimen Stamps, but again the 1c and 2c values do not exist with this underprint. Forgeries exist of the 10 Pesetas postage, the Express stamp and of all the Airmails; stamps with control A,000,000 can also be forgeries. Imperforate single stamps are reported for several values, but there is some doubt about their authenticity; they appear usually to be 'created' from stamps with the variety imperforate between stamp and margin, then cut down on the other three sides in order for them to appear to be imperforate all round. We have limited our listing of imperforate stamps for the moment to the 5c Airmail.

Identifying forgeries of the 10 Pesetas:

Forgeries exist in the issued colour of the 10 Pesetas and also in a changed colour of orange-red. Unlike the 1931 Postal Congress set (described later) and several other Spanish issues of this period, there are no authentic Colour Change varieties of the 1930 Railway Issue, in either the postage or airmail sets, although there are a few minor shades.

A further test is in the quality and shape of letters in the imprint at the bottom of the stamp, for example in the 'DE'.

Identifying Forgeries of the 20c Express :

This is another dangerous forgery, not easily spotted. We have found one of the best tests to be the letters 'MA' of 'MADRID', and especially the 'A', at the left side of the stamp. We have illustrated a black proof of the forgery below, because this is the sharpest image to compare, but the forgery is normally found in something very close to the issued colour.

Scan 1 : 20c Express: Genuine / authéntico : The right down-stroke of the 'M' is thinner than the left down-stroke, but less so than in the forgery. An easier test is the space in the centre of the 'A', which is just a slit, like a capital letter 'I' (without serifs).

Scan 2 : Forgery / falso : The right down-stroke of the 'M' is more noticeably thinner than the left down-stroke; the space in the centre of the 'A' is now almost a triangle. You will notice than the line below 'MAD' is much thinner in the forgery but, understandably, many people find this kind of test difficult unless they have two stamps to compare.

Above: Fronts and Backs of the only two reported values from this issue that exist as Imperf Between Pairs, the 15c Postage and the 50c Airmail.
For some time it was believed that all the 50c stamps emanated from the sheet numbered A000,251, but recent information reports that stamps from sheets A000,251 to A000,254 inclusive display this variety, suggesting that perhaps four sheets of stamps were perforated at a time. Both the 15c Postage and 50c Airmail with this variety are scarce.

Used examples of most values of the Postage set are generally scarcer than the already elusive mint stamps. A special postmark with which these stamps are sometimes found cancelled, both on the first day of issue and for a few days afterwards, is that of the Senate courier, an example of which is shown below:

The Airmail Set :

Espana Congreso Ferrocarriles 1930

The Airmail stamps, showing the front of a locomotive in the shield, have many more listed varieties than the postage stamps but some do not appear to us to be constant varieties, such as the short top bar to the top of the figure 25 in the 25c and a small white circle in the left margin of the 4 Pts, as well as other listed varieties. We have limited our listing of varieties primarily to those that are found on all values, but a close study of these stamps reveal many more small varieties.

The 4 Pts may be found in up to three variants of this, but we have chosen not to list any of these types of variety. However, we have listed the constant varieties, which occur on all six values of the set, dé for de (4th small scan above) and dot to lower left of 'I' of 'TIMBRE' in the imprint (5th scan). Due to poor centring, the dot below 'I' variety is often lost to the perforation holes and, consequently, it is very much harder to put together a set with this variety, although this difficulty is not reflected in its identical catalogue pricing with the dé variety.

All six values of the airmail set were forged. Forgeries of the Airmail stamps display several differences from the originals.

1. In the part of the stamp showing a shield, the genuine stamp has the word MADRID larger and this is especially noticeable when comparing the letters 'A' and 'D', which are about the same size.
In the forgery, the 'A' looks much smaller than the 'D'.

2. On the genuine stamp, the dot pattern below the date 1930 starts with two dots, one below the '9' of '1930', one below the '3' of '1930'
In the Forgery, the pattern starts with a single dot touching the frame line above, the dot located between the '9' and '3' of `1930'

1931 : III Congreso de la Unión Postal Panamericana ; Third Panamerican Postal Union Congress

This issue must have set records for the number of ways a single issue can be presented, in terms of colours, missing overprints and a plethora of different styles of Specimen stamp, many of which we do not list, as they are 'taladro'-style specimens from groups 5 and 6, outside the scope of this article, as described higher up.

There are two designs of railway, or rather tramway, interest in this set, the top two values of the Postage set/10 (4 Pts & 10 Pts) and the top value of the Airmail set/6 (4 Pts). The Spanish Post Office issued this set in many forms, including several Errors of Colour. A few of these errors of colour are in totally different colours to the issued postage or official stamps, but some of these so-called 'errors of colour' are simply stamps in the colours of the Official stamps but with the 'Oficial' overprint omitted. In our opinion, this would have been a better way to describe them. However, to avoid confusion in comparing listings, we have adhered to the existing convention.
.

The 10 Pts Postage: We have handled many of these stamps, typically described as Chestnut in colour, including those with C.U.P.P. overprints and Specimen perforations and we have also had several of the 'Oficial' stamps through our hands, typically described as Yellow-Chestnut. The difference in shade between the postage and official stamps is really very minor and is possibly the result of some contamination of the ink in part of a single print run for all these stamps rather than a totally new colour. We don't know, but if there was only one print-run, then the Oficial overprints were probably applied to the later part of the print-run, once the contamination, perhaps some of the violet ink from printing of the 4 Pts(?), had progressively been eliminated.

This slightly lighter 'Yellow-Chestnut' shade is given as the colour for the Official stamps, as against 'Chestnut' for the Postage stamp. This 'Yellow-Chestnut' colour is reported to exist without the overprint 'Oficial', although we have never seen a convincing example of it. However, it is listed by Edifil, and they choose to describe it as an Error of Colour of the Postage 10 Pts, although it could just as easily be described as overprint omitted on the Oficial 10 Pts. We have listed it below as per Edifil, albeit with reservations.

Below is a scan provided solely to compare shades of the 10 Pts. Unlike many other scans in this article, the stamps shown above were taken together as a single scan and the varying intensity of colour is accurate. Whether the actual colours are true may depend on the individual computer on which the scan is viewed.

Espana III Congreso Postal 1931

Note: All the stamps shown above are illustrated again further down under their respective issues and catalogue-style listings.

As can just be seen in the scan, apart from the obviously different olive-black error of colour, there is only a very minor difference in colour between all the rest of these stamps. The Official stamps appear to be a fraction lighter (or more yellow) than the postage stamps but the postage stamp perforated with the word SPECIMEN is somewhere in between, and perhaps nearer to Yellow-Chestnut than Chestnut.

As mentioned above, the Edifil listing gives two errors of colour for the 10 Pts postage, in Yellow-Chestnut and in Olive-Black. However, we strongly recommend that you do not attempt to buy this Yellow-Chestnut so-called 'error of colour' unless it is sold together with a normal 10 Pts Postage and you are satisfied that it really is different enough.

The Postage 4 Pts & 10 Pts.

The principal design of these stamps is a flag-raising in a plaza crowded with Republican supporters, some standing on the roof of a tramcar at the right side of the stamp. Below is a postcard view, taken from almost the same vantage point, showing trams in the plaza. Note the advertising roof-board, similar to that visible on the tramcar in the stamp design.

This 1936 Asociacion Prensa (A.P.) set consists of 31 values in 10 designs (5 Postage, 1 Express, 4 Airmail). In addition to regular sheet issues as shown above, one value of each design of the stamps was also overprinted 'A.P.', these in very small numbers. Also, perhaps in the same or slightly larger numbers(?), the full set of 31 stamps was overprinted '1936'. Both of these limited printings are found affixed (without hinges) into presentation booklets, with the tops of the stamps moistened and stuck directly into the booklets. We are not aware that any of these stamps were released except in the booklets, which, if true, would preclude their existence in never hinged condition. However, the stamps are occasionally found mint hinged, 'liberated' carefully from their booklets.

We display first, the 'A.P.' overprint set, in its simple paper presentation folder. We have shown the open booklet as well, the contents scanned with some overlap over two scans:

We reproduce the above by kind permission of the Spanish Study Circle. It appears in S. Nathan's catalogue 'The Railway Theme in Spanish Philately', published in 1978 as Spanish Philatelic Society Bookclub No. 10. Nathan describes it as rare and gives the date as 1939. If so, the inscription, Republica Espanola, speaks of a Republican design at the very end of the civil war, which effectively ended when Franco's Nationalist army entered Madrid on March 28th 1939. The image is monochrome, the essay reported to be in Reddish-Brown.

1940 : 1900th Anniversary of the Virgin of El Pilar : Tramway Bridge

Horse trams were introduced to Zaragoza in 1885 and the network was progressively electrified from 1902 onwards. The tramway network in Zaragoza was quite extensive and flourished until the 1950s, when the first moves were made to replace them with trolleybuses and occasionally motor buses. Eventually motor buses also replaced the trolleybuses but a few old trams persisted, the last finally being withdrawn in 1976. However, trams were soon to make a comeback, with Zaragoza committing to a new tramway system in around 2007.

There is a shrine to Our Lady of Pilar (Nuestra Seńora del Pilar) in the Cathedral (Temple) in Zaragoza. It celebrates an apparition in AD 40. The bridge in front of the church, la Puente de Piedra, was in use by tramcars at the time of a 1940 stamp issue to celebrate the rebuilding of the Cathedral and the bridge appears on two of the stamps in the set.

Introduction & Information on Reprints:

The Spanish Civil War lasted from 1936 to 1939, during which time thousands of stamps, with varying levels of postal validity, were issued both by towns and organizations. The two sides in the conflict were the Nationalist side under General Franco, and the Republican side, an informal alliance of many groups and movements of quite varied world outlook. It is not our intention here to attempt to give any political background to the individual stamp issues. There is ample material online for those who wish to study the conflict, which can still be the source of deep divisions in Spain.

This Section is devoted to the stamps carrying the name of a town or province. One railway design in this section was used for 15 different towns (16 including Montejaque), a train-on-bridge design issued in Malaga Province; the El Burgo example is shown below.

These issues have, in recent years, presented collectors with a problem or two. As far as we can glean, the basic printing plates for the stamps were re-used in the early 1950s, possibly, according to one source, by Sr. Guillamon, but the information that we have on them is all rather vague. In order to avoid much repetition, we are prefacing this Section with a general assessment of these stamps and the comments apply to all the 15 towns which we know to have issued postage stamps in this design.

Malaga Province Train-on-Bridge design

The design above was used to produce stamps for the following towns in Malaga province around 1938:
Alozaina, Arriate, Benarrabas, Comares, El Burgo, Estepona, Gaucin, Genalguacil, Istan, Jimera de Libar, Montejaque (revenue/fiscal only known to us), Manilva, Riogordo, Sayalonga, Teba, Villanueva de Tapia

Only four basic colours were used for the original stamps : Blue, Brown, Reds various (rose-red to deep wine-red) and Violet, although there are very significant shades within these four basic colours. Most stamps appear to have been issued in single colours, except that the name of the town has often (perhaps always?) been added in a separate operation. The town name is often in the same colour ink as the stamp, sometimes in a very similar ink but in a slightly different shade, sometimes in a second colour. It can sometimes be very difficult to distinguish that the town name is in a different shade, despite a catalogue stating that the stamp is bi-colour.

Reprints (Reimpresiones)
When these stamps were reprinted, it appears that they were produced in up to five colours per town, thus producing many, many stamps in colours which were never issued during the period of postal use of the stamps. This includes a few reprints in Orange, a colour never used for originals. In the case of brown stamps, we have seen reprints in dark brown and chestnut-brown, on occasions in both shades for the same town. We have listed these separately where we have seen them, but we have not assumed that both browns exist in reprints for all towns.

Usually in philately, reprints of this nature, even from original plates, would command little interest and low prices but, perhaps because few of these reprints appear to have been made, they do fetch quite good prices; indeed, in the case of the towns for which original stamps are a little more plentiful, such as Comares and Estepona, these reprints in unissued colours often sell for more than original stamps.

How to identify the reprints when in the colour of the original stamps:

1. The majority of these reprints are Imperforate. If the original stamp is not listed imperforate, any imperforate example may be assumed to be a reprint. A small number of the reprints, though, may be found perforated.

2. The paper of the reprints is very different. Nearly all original stamps are on paper which, when held to the light, appears smooth and of good quality. For most towns, the paper is a fresh, white colour; the exceptions are Estepona, Manilva and Teba (and blue stamps from Arriate), which are usually on toned paper, but still of a good quality. All original stamps are on quite thick paper. The c.1950s reprints are on toned (brownish) paper and, this a very good test, when held to the light, the paper appears very patchy and of exceptionally poor quality with many thinner patches, almost like a 19th century hand-made paper. These reprints are on thinner paper than the originals.

3. Fonts used for the town name : In some cases, the reprints display a different font for some letters of the town name. We have shown originals and reprints alongside each other where we have the material to be able to do so. However, there were often several varieties of the town name on original stamps and we have not been able to study full sheets of any original stamp. It is therefore possible that examples of variations of font which we have described in the text below as features of reprints may, in some cases, match that of a stamp from the issued sheets. We would welcome further information on this from readers.

4. We have never seen a used example of a reprint, nor can they legitimately exist.

Proofs of the Reprints : These are found without name in the cartouche. We have been informed that the following colours exist, all imperforate. There may be more than we have listed.

Proof without town name in Chestnut-Brown, reprint [ . ]
Proof without town name in Violet, reprint [ . ]
Proof without town name in Orange, reprint [ . ]

We have no information that a wine-red proof of the reprints was produced.
.

Two-Colour Stamps in this design (originals): As discussed above, it can sometimes be hard to decide whether the town name was added in a second operation or whether, when it has been added in a second operation, the stamp and the town name colours can be distinguished at all. In our catalogue-style listings, we have usually listed stamp colours as per any published catalogue listing known to us, even where examples of the stamps that we have seen do not clearly display any second colour that is listed.

Sellos Ardales - Provincia de Málaga Province stamps

For many years, we believed that this stamp showed a viewing platform, with a step, on a footpath, but we are now inclined to believe it does show railway tracks, albeit of too narrow a gauge, but the stamp is not particularly well-drawn. See El Churro in this section (further down) for a better-drawn image.

There is a railway line which passes through the mountains in the region of Ardales, in very close proximity to the Caminito del Rey, a treacherous mountain path, which has only recently been reopened, after being closed for extensive repairs and the addition of some safety features in the wake of several fatal falls.

If you enjoy scary images(!), try inputting Caminito del Rey in a search engine and checking out the images both from before (hair-raising) and after the safety improvements were made. Some of the still images show the adjacent railway but most images are from after the repairs. However, there is an amazing video, nothing to do with stamps, but well worth a 6-minute diversion, a 'horror film' about this incredibly dangerous mountain pathway before it was repaired. Not to be missed! Click here (opens in a new tab) to walk the Caminito del Rey before it was repaired.

There is also an atmospheric YouTube video taken of (and from) steam trains, in which the Caminito del Rey path can be seen clinging to the side of a mountain, whilst the railway passes from tunnel to viaduct to tunnel. We cannot identify the exact location of the image in the stamp, but the footpath, which was only used in the 1930s by workmen to reach their workplace (a new dam), was extremely narrow and a wide gallery, such as shown on the stamp, would be quite out of character. However, permanent way workers on the railway could have been provided with a refuge area such as this. Based on what we know, we have decided that these stamps do probably show railway tracks and they are therefore included. Click here (opens in a new tab) for a 4-minute railway journey.

However, there are shades of all these stamps, but for the Blue, Red and Orange stamps, the differences we have seen have been fairly minor. However, two of the colours come in very significant shades as follows:

Green and Dull Greyish-Green : we have listed both.

The 'brown' comes in many shades from Chestnut-Brown through Pale Brown to Greyish-Brown and Pale Brownish-lilac. We have chosen to pare this down to two shades for listing purposes:

The range from Chestnut-Brown to Pale Brown is listed below as Fawn-Brown, with the brown predominant.
The range from Greyish-Brown to Pale Brownish-Lilac is listed below as Lilac-Grey, the greyness being predominant.

Further notes :
1. The Sofima catalogue lists only one green shade but has the additional violet-grey (lilac-grey) shade.

2. Tęte-bęche pairs. Sofima lists them for all values except the lilac-grey but, if this is just a shade, as we believe, then the lilac-grey should also exist tęte-bęche, and we have therefore listed it thus but without any proof to date. A correspondent has kindly informed us that the Galvez catalogue states that the only inverted stamp in the sheet is in the bottom right-hand corner, so providing only one tęte-bęche pair per sheet, which could obviously be extracted as a horizontal or a vertical pair. Our study leads us to think that the sheets were probably 6 columns down, but we are unsure how many rows across.

3. We have not seen any imperforate tęte-bęche pairs in this design, but see no reason why they would not exist and we have therefore given them a catalogue-style listing.

4. We advise that Imperforate stamps should only be collected in pairs or as singles with large margins, as some perforated stamps could be cut down to appear imperforate.

5. At the foot of the catalogue-style listing for Ardales are the stamps in Pale Grey-Green and Lilac-Grey, included only as shades, not as additional colours.

6. There is a constant plate flaw located 'penultimate row, second stamp from the right margin'. This variety is a badly damaged 'E' in 'ARDALES', rendering the letter rather closer to a 'C', described below as ARDALCS for ARDALES. We are not aware that this variety has been listed elsewhere but do not have access to all Spanish Civil War catalogues. The flaw appears in all the colours in which the stamps were printed and is illustrated below:
.

Above: The Factory design, possibly railway, possibly a road train.

In these two designs from Asturias y Leon, one has a clear railway interest, but the other is currently in doubt. The stamp with factory chimneys appears to show some form of steam locomotive hauling some trucks, but it is unclear whether this is a steam tractor on roadway or a steam locomotive on tracks. The vehicles being hauled display wheels which are more like those on road vehicles, but the quality of the drawing and of the printing is so poor that it is impossible to be sure without some additional evidence. Does anyone have a photo or postcard of this scene or some knowledge of the factory in the view perhaps? For the moment, we are only giving catalgue-style listings to the mine truck type.

Sellos Bilbao - Provincia de Vizcaya Province stamps

We have not seen the full sheet layouts for these stamps and it is possible they were printed in more than one format. Se-tenant pairs of different values are found but one can also find multiples of the same value. There are 7 stamps in each set, but only two, the 5c and 15c are of tramway / railway interest. We have only seen the 5c in vertical se-tenant pairs with the 1 Pta (General Franco). We have seen the 15c se-tenant with a 10c on its left and the 15c se-tenant with a 50c on its right. For the present, we have only listed these se-tenant combinations that we have seen. We have assumed that the Imperfs, which we list separately, follow the same pattern.

The 5c value shows an electric tramcar just coming onto the bridge at the right. The printing quality of the stamp is poor, with the rose window of San Anton blending into the roof of the tramcar. Even with the enlarged detail view of the stamp provided, it is hard to discern. Note that the angle of the trolley pole (carrying the electric current to the tramcar) on the stamp indicates that the tram is heading towards us, and thus in the opposite direction to that shown on the tram on the postcard. The card was posted in 1931 and does appear to be from around that date.

These 'Ayuntamiento' stamps are smaller, measuring 22.5 x 30 mms (as against the 28 x 37.5 mms of the 5c values above). They appear at first sight to be local revenue stamps but stamps so inscribed were not infrequently used for postage in many areas during the Civil War and these stamps are, we learn, listed in Edifil and therefore must presumably have seen postal use.

Sellos Burgos - Provincia de Burgos Province stamps

Spanish Espana Guerra Civil War Burgos

Many stamps of Burgos, including those shown below, are usually listed in main catalogues. In the case of Stanley Gibbons, they explain their inclusion of these (Nationalist) issues by citing that they were authorised by local civil governors or military commanders - and that they were put into use. For consistency and simplicity, we list them here with the other Civil War issues. They were only issued as se-tenant blocks/4 within the sheets, not in sheets all of the same design.

Sellos El Chorro - Provincia de Málaga Province stamps

Spain Spanish Espana sellos postales Guerra Civil War El Chorro Malaga Province stamps

We have no information about these stamps; they are most likely related to the Civil War. El Chorro is a small, rural railway station surrounded by a few houses and shops immediately to the south of the Caminito del Rey, and the stamps clearly seem to depict the railway as it passes through those hills. See under 'Ardales' higher up in this section for further information on the Caminito del Rey. These stamps appear to be very scarce.

Reprints in Blue (imperf), Violet (imperf), Brown (perf) and Brown (imperf). There are no obvious font differences between the originals and the reprints.

We have not seen the imperforate stamp in blue, with name in black, shown alongside the original perforated stamp and have therefore been unable to check whether it is on original paper. The margins in the scan may just be sufficient to prove it to be a true imperforate.

Montcada y Reixac sellos postales stamps Spain Guerra Civil War
Lower scan, a block/4 Imperf x Perf (railway trucks design).

.

We examine the stamps issued in sheets/25 first, which are in different colours to stamps from sheetlets.

The designs:
Railways Tracks: This stamp is inscribed lightly 'MONTCADA' and shows several tracks close to a railway junction.

Bridge design: The bridge in the foreground carries the railway between Vic and Puigcerdŕ. The stamp is (very lightly) inscribed 'RIO RIPOLL', which is the river that the bridge spans. You can see a modern picture of a train on this bridge at: Modern View (opens in new tab)

Factory and Trucks design (vertical format): This shows two railway trucks immediately above the word 'Ajuntamente' in the design; this is quite probably a view of today's Cimentera Lafarge, which still has adjacent railway tracks, although we have not been able to establish whether the factory itself is still served by the railway. The stamp is very lightly, and unclearly, inscribed 'EL CIMENT'. The ownership and name of this cement factory in the 1930s is not known to us, but it appears to be Swiss-owned currently.

Stamps issued is sheetlets/4 of the same design, cut from printer's sheets of 16, formed of 4 sheetlets.
These same designs were issued again, this time printed in sheets/16 with wide spacing between each group of four stamps. These sheets/16 were usually cut down into their four panes/4, but uncut sheets of 4 sheetlets are occasionally encountered. See below for two examples of uncut sheets.

All three of the railway-related designs in sheetlets come in two bi-colour combinations, but in all cases in different colours to the sheet stamps issued in sheets/25. The sheetlet colour combinations are as follows:

Railway Tracks Design sheetlets: Most commonly in Yellow-Orange & Black; also in Red and Black (much scarcer).
Railway Bridge Design sheetlets: Most commonly in Red & Black; also in Blue & Black (scarcer).
Trucks/Factory Design sheetlets: Most commonly in Blue & Black; also in Red & Black (scarcer).

Marginal Text Layout for all the Uncut Sheetlets, illustrated using Railway Tracks design sheetlets:
Each pane of four was numbered (above the four stamps) but in a manner which produced three different sheetlets/4 from each sheet/16 stamps in terms of the spelling and colouring of 'Num', as follows:

The text ' Núm ...... ' appeared twice in Black with an accent on the u (Núm......), once in Black without accent on the u (Num......) and once in the colour (other than black) in which the stamps were printed (with accent).

Examination of uncut sheets/16 reveal that the printed text 'Núm ......' in Black occurs in the North-West and South-East positions, 'Num ......' without accent is in the South-West corner and 'Núm ...... ' in the second colour of each printing is in the North-East corner, whilst the sheet numbering itself is in Black in all cases, as shown below.

Sellos Montejaque - Provincia de Málaga Province

Montejaque Derechos y Tasas Spain Guerra Civil War stamps

This is a local revenue (fiscal) stamp and it is the only revenue usage we know for this design and therefore included here for convenience. It is surcharged 50c and overprinted DERECHOS y TASAS (Fees and Taxes). Montejaque is a small town a few kilometres west of Ronda. We do not have any information to suggest that this small town ever used a stamp in this design for postal purposes and, therefore, the availability of such stamps to create a municipal revenue is certainly a little mysterious.

Sellos Nerja - Provincia de Málaga Province stamps

One design from this town is widely collected by railway thematic collectors. It certainly appears to show railway tracks, although we have not been able to find evidence of a railway or tramway in this town. However, as the stamp is so poorly produced, there is also no conclusive evidence that it necessarily shows the sea-front at Nerja and we have therefore included this design in this article.

** Many imperforate stamps offered on the market are cut from the miniature sheets. The single-colour perforated stamp in Brown from full sheets has imprint 'Lit. E MOLINA' below the stamp and this imprint is naturally also present on genuine Imperforate stamps from full sheets. Absence of the imprint on this stamp in Brown indicates that it has been cut from miniature sheets, some of which have this stamp in Brown only, rather than the normal three-colour versions.

The scan of the stamp below is something of a mystery, as we do not believe the miniature sheets are found perforated. More information on this would be welcome; for the present, we are assuming that it is a private perforation.

There are no easily defined variations in the town name between the original stamps and the reprints which are applicable to all the stamps. Variations do occur on some stamps but listing these as identifying features could be misleading. The paper test is the best.

Sellos Riotinto - Provincia de Huelva Province stamps

Riotinto is an enormous and ancient mining area and the name is that of its river which runs red with iron and copper deposits. The mining would presumably have relied heavily on railways in the last 150 years, hence, no doubt, the steam locomotive in the stamp design.

We have only a poor copy of the Rose stamp to display. In the pair shown above, the right stamp shows the 'figure 5' variety. Stamps printed in sheets/36 (6x6) with all outer edges imperforate.

Above: Originals in Violet and Blue. Note the narrow, perhaps italic-font, 'S' in 'Sayalonga' in the two left-hand stamps in the block/4, whilst the other two have normal 'S' in this block/4 original stamps. This demonstrates that identifying reprints purely by font variations can be an imprecise science, unless you have a large selection of original stamps for comparison.

Although perhaps not obvious from the scans below, close examination of the 'l' in 'Sayalonga' on some of the reprints reveal a tapered letter, narrowing at the foot, but this is not a feature on all reprints.

Section 4: School for Orphans of Railway Workers charity stamps.
. . . . . . . . . Sellos de caridad Colegio de Huerfanos de Ferroviarios.

These are very attractive stamps, all showing the same locomotive, with very many printings and a range of perforation types. We do not have any guide or listing by which to organize these stamps, nor can we know whether the listing is complete. There are four basic values known to us, 10c, 25c, 50c and 1 Pts, plus a surcharge 10c / 1 Pta.

This section first looks at proofs and specimens, which are all recess-engraved, then describes the stamps Perforated 14, also recess-printed, and apparently the first stamps produced. The quality of production of these recess-printed stamps is vastly superior to all the later issues.

We have not seen issued stamps in the 25c or 50c values that are recess-printed and Perforated 14, although we have seen an imperforate composite proof sheetlet with two recess-engraved examples each of the 10c and 50c IMPERFORATE, all printed in black and blue. See the right-hand scan below for the composite sheetlet.

Whilst researching another article, we came across a scan (see left-hand scan above) of 10c stamps in Black & Blue, perforated and overprinted SPECIMEN. All the issued recess-engraved 10c values known to us are in Black and shades of Red. These 10c Black & Blue specimen stamps are the work of Thomas de la Rue & Company and these four were sold by Cherrystone Auctions in 2011. They were were affixed to a card with the reference number '70' beneath, quite possibly the folio number for this design in the De La Rue archive.

The Recess-Engraved stamps (believed to be the First Issue):
The 10c black & red and the One Peseta black & blue exist recess-printed and perforated 14 and both appear to have been issued, as was the 1 Pta surcharged 10 cts in red. We presume the issued recess-printed stamps were also De la Rue productions. Of these recess-printed stamps, only the 10c is commonly seen.

The later (non-engraved) stamps:
All Huerfanos stamps from this point are printed by lithography or other non-engraved processes, probably by printers in Spain, rather than by De La Rue. We have described them as 'litho' in all cases below, but some may have been produced by other printing methods. We examine these non-engraved stamps in the following groups:

** Stamps Perforated 11 or 11˝ without overprint SIN VALOR POSTAL (no franking value)
** Stamps Perforated 11 or 11˝ overprinted SIN VALOR POSTAL
** Stamps Rouletted 11 or 11˝ overprinted SIN VALOR POSTAL

Almost all the stamps show the locomotive going from right to left. Stamps showing a similar 10c stamp, but with the locomotive going from left to right, are shown lower down in this section.

50c Steam locomotive : Black & Blue : Litho, Perf 11 or 11˝ SIN VALOR POSTAL [ . ]

We have not seen the 25c or 1 Pta Litho in Perf 11 / 11˝. If they exist, they will almost certainly be a 25c in Black & Green [ ? ] and a 1 Pta. in Black & Orange [ ? ]

Note : The scan above also shows a 10c with punch hole (taladro). This would typically be the result of the stamp being affixed to the back of a railway ticket, which was usually punched to show that the ticket-holder had travelled. An example is shown lower down. We believe that the public could choose to support the charity by buying one of the stamps along with their train ticket at a railway station. Clearly these stamps were also affixed to letters and/or documents, as postmarked examples are also found, although any such postal cancellations should probably only have been applied to the regular Spain stamps, and not to the charity stamps.

Section 5: Civil War: Political Labels, Propaganda, Social etc, including Russian (Soviet) pro-Republican vignettes.
. . . . . . . . . Guerra Civil: Sellos políticos, propaganda y otras, incluidas las vińetas pro republicanas rusas (soviéticas)

This section deals with labels / vignettes of the Civil War period, either nondenominated or denominated for charity purposes (typically 10c) but without postal franking value. Such labels were primarily propaganda stamps produced both in Spain and abroad, the majority supportive of the Republican side. Many collectors of Spanish Civil War stamps include these political vignettes in their stamp collections. They are listed below in no particular order.

The above scans illustrate the four railway-related designs from the sheets, each sheet being produced in six colours. The subject matter of the stamps is a mixture and includes military and industrial scenes, collective farming and views of the idyllic life enjoyed in Stalin's Russia!
At the very bottom of this article, we have re-produced an entire sheet/50, along with their descriptions, as we are not aware that this has been made available online anywhere else. Columns 1 and 5 of the sheets are the vertical designs and are printed at right-angles to the horizontal design stamps in Columns 2,3 & 4.

These postcards promoting 'The Railway Workers in the War' exhibition each carry a different republican propaganda message, loosely translated below (in scan order, i.e. top row, then second row):

1. 'The war is the bridge which opens up the path to our freedom'. The letters UHP on the flag are the initials of the Uníos Hermanos Proletarios (United Brothers of the Proletariat).
2. 'The sole control (of the railways) opens the way to our victory'
3. 'Join the Railway Militia'
4. 'A minute lost in the rearguard can mean a defeat at the front'.
5. 'Forward, Railwaymen!'

Barcelona : Seventh Anniversary of Republic miniature sheets; Séptimo aniversario de la República (hojas).

The 1931 tram design postage stamp was reproduced on miniature sheets dated 1938 for the 7th Anniversary of the Republic and these most likely emanated from Barcelona. The nominal values in which this miniature sheet appears are 2 Pts and 5 Pts and these will logically be Republican propaganda sheetlets, but we are not aware that they are connected to any postal service during the Civil War. We list below what we have seen, but other combinations of face value / Perf / Imperf / Overprints possibly exist.

Listing all the railway cinderellas of a country is an impossible task and we have no ambition to do so for Spain. The material below, therefore, is a selection, presented in no special order, and includes publicity labels for the 1948 Railway Centenary, for which we have attempted to provide a complete listing and have therefore provided check-boxes, followed by a few other railway cinderellas / vignettes / revenue stamps which we hope you will find interesting.

An example of a full sheetlet/12 is illustrated after the catalogue-style listing below.

FEDERACIÓN NACIONAL DE FERROVIARIOS (National Federation of Railway Workers).

Spain Espana Ferrocarril sindicato trade union stamp Railway Spain Espana Ferrocarril sindicato trade union stamp Railway

These two stamps are Railway Trades' Union membership stamps, denominated 1 Pta or 2 Pts. They were, we think, in use for quite a long period up to and including the Civil War period. Most railway workers would have supported the Republican cause. The organization's name - FNIF - on the right stamp is spelt out fully on the left-hand stamp and translates as the National Federation of Workers in the Railway Industry, which is much broader than just railway workers, and includes those in railway manufacturing and many associated activities.

Shortly before publishing this list, the booklet shown below was being offered on todocoleccion.net. It displays the use of these monthly union membership contribution stamps for the 12 months of 1938 and, most interestingly, the membership rate appears to have been altered from 1 Pta to 2 Pts in the middle of the year, necessitating the production of the new stamp. The FNIF, along with all but one other trades union, were banned in Franco's Spain and 1938 may therefore have been the last full year when membership of the FNIF was legal.

The stamps show a social centre for railway workers and the face value on the stamps was to raise money for its upkeep.

Billetes por Kilometros :

A typical booklet, with one 'shy' person's face now obliterated! The list of participating railway companies is at top right.
Espana Spain Stamp sellos postales Billetes por Kilometors
The embossed colourless seal over the stamp can just be made out in the scan above, covering most of the stamp.

This is an interesting stamp, apparently used mainly in the early years of the 20th century. It was affixed inside the front of booklets containing train ticket coupons, which permitted travel for a certain distance by one or more named people during a period of typically 6 months or one year. The booklet had a photograph which showed ALL those entitled to use the coupons for travel.

It was valid on all the lines of the participating railway companies. Booklets that we have seen suggest that this was usually around a dozen companies, but it varied from year to year. These booklets can also be found issued outside Spain, such as one we have seen issued in New York, which would have allowed tourists to pre-pay railway journeys in their own currency and benefit from any discounts that these coupon booklets carried.

An online search has found examples of booklets issued for distances of 2000, 5000, 6000 and 12,000 Kilometres, but the same stamp is used for all of them. The stamp would appear to be the principal revenue security measure, an embossed, colourless seal being applied to the stamp once affixed to the page, thus validating the booklet.

Poster Stamps for Montserrat Monastery :
Special Events, Tourist Locations and Business Publicity are probably the three commonest subjects of poster stamps. In the case of Spain, other than Civil War propaganda, tourism would appear to be the richest source of railway-related poster stamps in the period this article covers. Montserrat Monastery features very frequently amongst railway-related poster stamps of Spain and some of these are shown below:

Espana Spain poster stamps vinetas railway ferrocarril tren Montserrat Monastery Espana Spain poster stamps vinetas railway ferrocarril tren Montserrat Monastery Espana Spain poster stamps vinetas railway ferrocarril tren Montserrat Monastery Espana Spain poster stamps vinetas railway ferrocarril tren Montserrat Monastery Espana Spain poster stamps vinetas railway ferrocarril tren Montserrat Monastery

The Monastery at Montserrat has long been a tourist attraction with both a funicular railway and a steam rack railway bringing tourists to the site of this major attraction, not far from Barcelona and with origins as far back as the 11th Century.

That concludes the main body of this article. There is some additional information with scans below. If you find errors, please let us know and, if you can help with better scans where we only have poor ones, we would be pleased to receive them.
